Happy Gillis

I had lunch last week at a cute little restaurant called Happy Gillis Cafe & Hangout. It is on the corner of Gillis and Pacific, near the historic Columbus Park.  The restaurant is located in the old Gillis Sundries, and the original sign still hangs.

Not only is the restaurant vintage and unique, the food was great! Happy Gillis has different soups/sandwiches/salads daily (along with their set menu) , made fresh right in front of you. I went with the sandwich special, a ham, goat cheese and green apple panini. It was so delicious. My mom got the curry chicken salad sandwich, and it was great also! (I know what I will be ordering next trip). I wouldn't say I had buyers remorse, because I loved mine too, I just want the whole curry chicken salad sandwich next time.

Check out Happy Gillis' Web site for a full menu, and follow them on twitter for daily specials.

Hope you enjoy this local spot as much as I did!

Summer is finally here and I know what you are all thinking...how can we get that summer glow we have been waiting all winter for?!

However, after watching this video you might think twice about heading out into the sun without your sunscreen.

Here are some great alternatives...

Framed Wallpaper

What a great way to make easy and inexpensive art! You can find wallpaper in so many different colors and patterns for a very reasonable price. This is a perfect way to decorate a large bare wall without spending a lot of money on expensive artwork, and you are bound to find something that matches your current decor.

Garden Art

I am loving the playfulness of these sculptures created by Michael Craig-Martin a contemporary artist from Dublin.  These particular works of art were on display in the Roche Court, a sculpture garden at the New Art Centre in the UK.  How fun would it be to have one of these in your backyard!

Perfect Pairing

Another edition of "Perfect Pairing" where we express personal style through an interior space.  This week I was inspired by the use of color in this living room with exposed beams.

Living in

A fun and bold living room

Going out

A color-block dress really steals the show

These wedges are inspired by the contrast between black ceiling beams and natural wood floors

Accessories were used to complete the look with a pop of color
The red shoulder bag plays off of the bold red front door
A punch of pink comes from the chair as well as this fun fabric bracelet

Inspiration can be found in every room of your house, look around and get inspired.

Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake

I love the recipes that Val posts on her blog, ValSoCal . Came across this coffee cake recipe and new I had to try it. I don't really bake a lot, but figured this was easy enough, and it would probably taste good no matter what.

Ingredients
1 tube Large refrigerated cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing (I used 2 tubes, to fill in holes)
2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese, softened
3 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional, I left these out)
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup quick cooking oats
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 Tbsp butter, melted
whipped cream and additional cinnamon for topping (option, I also left these off)
